Μίλησέ μας λίγο για σένα, πού μεγάλωσες, με τι ασχολείσαι;
Γεννήθηκα και μεγάλωσα σε μια μικρή κωμόπολη της Κοζάνης. Τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια ζω στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Αυτή τη στιγμή δεν εργάζομαι, τελειώνω το δίπλωμά μου στο τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών του ΑΠΘ.
Πότε ξεκίνησες να ασχολείσαι με τη μουσική και τι σε τράβηξε στην ηλεκτρονική μουσική;
Η μουσική είναι αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του εαυτού μου. Μέχρι τα 21 μου δεν είχα σχέση με την techno. Τα ηλεκτρονικά μου ακούσματα έως τότε περιλάμβαναν κυρίως synth pop ακούσματα, με goth/dark wave επιρροές, EBM και experimental μουσική. Μια σύντομη επίσκεψη στο Βερολίνο το 2013 στάθηκε ικανή να με μυήσει στον σκοτεινό ήχο της πόλης.
Ποια είναι η Volkova, τι την εμπνέει μουσικά και τι θέλει να εκφράσει μέσω των ήχων;
Με εμπνέει η δυστοπική, spacey μουσική. Η Volkova είναι ένας ταξιδιώτης στη γη, στο διάστημα, στο χάος.
Μίλησέ μας για την underground σκηνή της Θεσσαλονίκης, και για την πορεία σου εκεί.
Το χρονικό διάστημα από το 2013 μέχρι το 2017, πλέον ως φανατική ακροάτρια, παρατηρούσα πως στην πόλη υπήρχε μια μικρή αλλά ενδιαφέρουσα underground σκηνή, στην οποία ήμουν regular. Η αλήθεια είναι πως πριν γνωρίσω τον πολύ καλό μου φίλο, SENKA, το DJing δεν μου είχε περάσει ποτέ από το μυαλό. Με ενέπνευσε αρκετά και με δίδαξε. Άνοιγα τα πάρτι που διοργάνωνε και αργότερα συμμετείχα στο Archaic Ways και έπειτα στο SINS, όπου είμαι resident.
Τι λείπει από την ηλεκτρονική/χορευτική μουσική σκηνή στη χώρα κι αν μπορούσες να αλλάξεις κάτι στη σκηνή σήμερα, τι θα ήταν αυτό;
Πριν την πανδημία η σκηνή της πόλης εξελισσόταν δυναμικά. Όλο και νεότερος κόσμος έμπαινε σε αυτή, τα πάρτι μεγάλωναν. Πιστεύω πως μετά την πανδημία θα υπάρξει σημαντική αλλαγή. Στην Ελλάδα θα ήθελα μεγαλύτερο κοινό, περισσότερη απελευθέρωση και diversity - πιστεύω είμαστε σε καλό δρόμο.
Πόσο εύκολο/δύσκολο είναι να κάνεις μια αξιοσέβαστη καριέρα αυτή τη στιγμή στην Ελλάδα;
Θεωρώ πως είναι σημαντικό για έναν καλλιτέχνη να βρίσκεται σε ένα μέρος με μεγάλο μουσικό πυρήνα, καθώς οι ευκαιρίες είναι περισσότερες και το κοινό μεγαλύτερο. Η Ελλάδα έχει ακόμα μικρό πυρήνα, δυστυχώς. Παρόλα αυτά, τα πράγματα είναι πιο ευοίωνα απ’ ότι παλαιότερα.
Είναι γεγονός ότι συνυπάρχουμε και προσπαθούμε για το καλύτερο σε μία πολύ ανταγωνιστική και κορεσμένη σκηνή. Τι θα συμβούλευες τις σημερινές ανερχόμενες DJs ως προς την προώθηση της καριέρας τους τοπικά, αλλά και διεθνώς;
Θα συμβούλευα το εξής : Περισσότερη μουσική, λιγότερα social media. Προφανώς αναγνωρίζω τις ευκαιρίες που παρέχουν - έχουν επηρεάσει και θετικά και αρνητικά τη σκηνή. Όμως η μουσική είναι αυτή που μένει στο τέλος!
Τον τελευταίο καιρό, έρχονται στην επιφάνεια όλο και περισσότερες περιπτώσεις ανισότητας των φύλων, αλλά και κακοποίησης σε πολλούς καλλιτεχνικούς τομείς (βλ. την πρόσφατη καμπάνια me too #ForTheMusic της Rebekah). Ποια είναι η γνώμη σου για τη θέση της γυναίκας στη μουσική σήμερα και ιδιαίτερα στον χώρο της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής;
Η γυναικεία παρουσία στο χώρο αυξάνεται δυναμικά και πλέον πολλά γυναικεία ονόματα έχουν κατακτήσει την ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Παρότι η κοινωνία εξελίσσεται, φαινόμενα ανισότητας και κακοποίησης δεν έχουν πάψει να υφίστανται. Ελπίζω σε έναν κόσμο όπου θα εκλείπουν.
Παίζει, τελικά, ρόλο το φύλο στην πορεία ενός δημιουργού κι αν ναι, πού το αποδίδεις; Γιατί έχει βελτιωθεί μεν, αλλά δεν έχει επιτευχθεί ακόμα η ισότητα μέσα στα χρόνια;
Ο σεξισμός είναι ένα κοινωνικό φαινόμενο που δύσκολα θα αποβάλλει η κοινωνία. Έχουμε πολύ δρόμο ακόμα, παγκοσμίως.
Σπούδασες Electrical and Computer Engineering και είσαι DJ, κοινώς δραστηριοποιείσαι σε δύο ανδροκρατούμενους χώρους. Πώς νιώθεις για όλο αυτό, έχεις εντοπίσει κοινές πρακτικές/συμπεριφορές;
Δεν έχω αντιμετωπίσει κάποια δυσκολία, όχι. Γενικά προσπαθώ να μην πορεύομαι με τους όρους ‘φύλο’ και ‘ανδροκρατούμενο’, γιατί για μένα είναι απλώς λέξεις και δεν τις ενστερνίζομαι. Χαίρουν ακόμα ιδιαίτερης σημασίας στην ελληνική κοινωνία, δυστυχώς.
Ποια είναι η καλύτερη συμβουλή που σου έχουν δώσει;
Μη φοβάσαι το χρόνο, ζήσε τον.
Ποια είναι τα σχέδιά σου για τους ερχόμενους μήνες;
Έχω βάλει στόχο να πάρω το πτυχίο μου και ίσως να κάνω ένα μικρό ταξίδι.
Πες μας για το mix σου - τι εκφράζεις μέσα από αυτό, ποια ήταν η λογική της επιλογής των κομματιών;
Δεν υπάρχει λογική. Το αντίθετο, βασικά.
Αν έπρεπε να ταξιδέψεις στο διάστημα και να πάρεις μαζί σου ένα μόνο άλμπουμ, ποιο θα ήταν;

Tell us a bit about yourself; where did you grow up, what are you currently doing?
I was born and raised in a small town in Kozani. I have been living in Thessaloniki for the past 10 years. At the moment, I am not working, I am about to graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
When did you become involved in the electronic music scene and what attracted you to it?
Music is an integral part of myself. Until I was 21, I had no relationship with techno at all. I was mainly listening to synth pop, with goth & dark wave influences, EBM and experimental music. A short visit to Berlin in 2013, though, was enough to introduce me to the dark sounds of the city.
Talk to us about your music, who is Volkova and what inspires her?
I am mostly inspired by dystopian and spacey music. Volkova is a traveler on earth, in space, in chaos.
Talk to us about the underground scene in Thessaloniki, and your journey there
From 2013 to 2017, then being a huge fan of techno as a listener and clubber, I noticed that in the city there was a small, yet interesting, underground scene, in which I was a regular. The truth is that before I met my very good friend, SENKA, DJing had never crossed my mind. He inspired me a lot and taught me how to DJ. I was a warm-upper at the parties he organized and later participated in the projects ‘Archaic Ways’ and then ‘SINS’, where I am currently a resident.
What is missing from the electronic music scene in Greece? If you could change one thing in the Greek scene, what would that be?
Before the pandemic, the city scene was evolving dynamically. More and more young people came into it, the party scene grew. I believe that after the pandemic there will be a significant change. In Greece specifically, I would like a bigger audience, more liberation and diversity - but I think that we are on the right track.
How easy or difficult is it to make a respectable career right now in Greece?
I think it is important for an artist to be in a place with a large musical core, as the opportunities are more and the audience is bigger. Greece still has a relatively small core, unfortunately. However, things are more auspicious than ever.
It is a fact that we all strive in a scene that is oversaturated. What would you advise upcoming DJs in terms of promoting their careers both locally and internationally?
I would advise the following: More music, less social media. I obviously recognize the opportunities those outlets provide - I believe that they have impacted the scene, both in a positive and negative way. Though, in the end, music prevails!
Lately, more and more cases of gender inequality and abuse in many artistic fields are surfacing (e.g. Rebekah's recent me too #ForTheMusic campaign). What is your opinion about the position of women in music today, and especially in electronic music?
The female presence in the scene is growing exponentially and now many female names have conquered the electronic music scene. Although society is evolving, phenomena of inequality and abuse have not ceased to exist. I hope we will get to live in a world where they will disappear one day.
Eventually, does gender affect an artist’s career path? Although it seems that the situation has improved, why haven’t we achieved equality yet?
Sexism is a social phenomenon that society will eliminate with difficulty. Globally speaking, we still have a long way to go.
You studied Electrical and Computer Engineering and you are a DJ; you are active in two male-dominated areas. How do you feel about all this, have you identified any common behaviors?
Personally, I haven’t encountered any difficulties, no. In general, I try not to use the terms 'gender' and 'male domination', because for me they are just words; I do not embrace them. Unfortunately, they still remain very important for the Greek society.
Which is the best advice that someone has given you?
Don’t be afraid of time; experience it.
What are your plans for the coming months?
My goal is to finally get my degree, and maybe go on a short trip.
Tell us about your mix - what do you want to express and what was your thinking behind the choice of those tracks?
Actually, there was no specific thinking behind the mix; quite the contrary to be honest.
If you had to travel to space and take just one album with you, which would it be?
